“When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from restless dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.”

Thus begins Franz Kafka’s story THE TRANSFORMATION, which describes the process of a nightmarish metamorphosis of a hard-working, well-adjusted employee who one day finds himself in the body of a beetle. Helpless and almost unable to move, Gregor Samsa finds that he is no longer able to communicate humanly. Powerless and rendered useless to society, the protagonist experiences how quickly the horror and pity of those around him turns to shame and distaste – and ultimately leads to his exclusion and isolation.

Inspired by the story published in 1915, Cuban choreographer Maura Morales is developing a new creation for TanzTheaterMünster in collaboration with composer Michio Woirgardt. In her dance exploration of the theme of metamorphosis, she explores the process of dehumanisation by questioning social structures and examining aspects of exclusion. In doing so, the ever-changing perception of others and of oneself is at the centre of the piece.
